Home security is a home owners continual concern. However, most of us do not want the hassle of installing/wiring expensive alarm systems and paying outrageous monthly monitoring fees. So, what are our options?
I recently purchased a home alarm system for my house; after many false alarms and I decided to unplug it. Time for a different security option, so I purchased the Ring®- a Wi-Fi enabled doorbell, solution solved on numerous fronts. The Ring doorbell is the size of a smartphone, it can be mounted with or without your existing wires. (If you mount it with the existing wires, it is ideal. One wire supplies the electrical power to the Ring, the other wires will ring your internal chime. If you don’t have existing wires, go wireless and charge the batteries every 5-6 months (battery removal required)). After the unit was mounted to my siding, I set up the Wi-Fi, connected to my Wi-Fi, and download the Ring App. The entire process was simple and took less than 30 minutes. (Hint: If you plan to purchase this device, make sure you have a strong Wi-Fi signal from where this will be mounted.)
Here are a few examples of what I have experienced with the Ring:
- If someone approaches my front porch, the Ring gives me instant notification on my device (Cell phone or tablet). If someone rings my doorbell, the Ring again will give me instant notification.
- The Ring records as soon as it detects motion. All videos are stored on your private account, which you can access from Cell phone or tablet. (For 30 days this service is free. After that, you pay $3/month or $30/year for video storage. Which is a very small cost when comparing to other security systems monthly/annual costs.)
- During a football game, I was on the couch with friends watching the game when I received notification that motion was set off. Seconds later, the doorbell rang. I opened the app and could see a man standing outside my door (in HD). I was able to find out what his agenda was and send him on his way, without even getting up from my chair. I can send solicitors away without ever needing to move or open the door. My wife can answer the doorbell from any room in the house, she can answer it from work, or even another state. If there is internet connection, we can view “Live” from our porch anyone coming to our house. We have seen UPS/FedEx/USPS deliveries. None of them threw the boxes at our porch. If they did, I would be able to identify them.
Now back to security: Burglars often ring your doorbell to see if you are home before breaking in. If you’re not home, you are an easy target. Not anymore. With the Ring you will see them as they enter your porch, and if they ring, you will be able to answer them on your phone, they will never know if you answered from your app away from your home or from inside your home, AND all of this is captured on video. Videos can be accessed anytime, you can email the videos to the police if you deem it to be a crime. The video and audio are very good HD quality. Did I also mention it records in the dark, and it does so with good quality? Overall, I cannot think of a better security option than the Ring doorbell. I would highly recommend the Ring to any homeowner.
